The Indian Premier League established by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India ) in 2007, is about to begin with its second season the "DLF IPL 2009".
IPL 2009 has been scheduled between April 18 and June 01 2009. Although the format has not changed, there have been some alterations in the rules of the matches. In the first season the number of international players was restricted to eight which has now increased to ten. However the number international player on field will still be four. The negotiation between the ECB & the BCCI has helped the British players to participate in the IPL 2009 for 3 weeks in- between their tours to the West Indies.
Pakistan will not be a part of IPL 2009 as the relations between India and Pakistan are not favorable at moment. Earlier it was decided that Mohammad Hafeez, Danish Kaneria, Asim Kamal, Yasir Arafat and Yasir Hameed would participate in the auction at Goa. The IPL has terminated the contract with the Pakistani players.
During the Auctions at Goa, the Australian Cricketers formed the biggest group from the foreign countries. 27 of them had shown interest in the IPL 2009, pacemen Doug Bollinger, Shaun Tait and Stuart Clark along with the domestic batsmen Adam Voges, Travis Birt, Lee Carseldine and Mark Cosgrove were up for sale. However, the big names in Australian cricket who had signed up the previous year have opted to remain absent in this lucrative tournament in 2009.
The purchase cap for players during the auction was raised to USD 7 Million from USD 5 million the last year.
The IPL 2009 also saw the resignation of the following players: The following players resigned from their franchises:- Virat Kohli (Bangalore Royal Challengers), Chamara Kapugedera (Chennai Super Kings), Ajantha Mendis (Kolkata Knight Riders), Brad Hodge (Kolkata Knight Riders), Dwayne Bravo (Mumbai Indians), Ravindra Jadeja (Rajasthan Royals).
